Faculty and graduate students in the Consulting Program of the Departments of Biostatistics and Statistics offer free statistical advice to University of Washington faculty, staff, and students through scheduled one hour consulting appointments during academic quarters when class is in session.  They provide assistance with:

• the design of studies and experiments, including the preparation of grant proposals
• data visualization and presentation
• choice and application of statistical methods
• development of specialized statistical methods in some cases

The consultants have experience primarily with the S-Plus, R, and Stata statistical analysis systems, but they work with clients using whatever statistical package is most convenient for them.  (Note:  Statistical consulting is for study design and data analysis advice, not software tutorials.)

To schedule an appointment, contact the Dept of Biostatistics or the Dept of Statistics (see below). Researchers may schedule an appointment in either department. If convenient appointment hours are not available in one department, clients may be referred to the other.  The schedule of appointments for the current academic quarter may be seen in the U.W. Statistical Consulting Calendar. You may request an appointment by phone or email (contact information below), or by submitting the Problem Description Form  required for all new appointments. 

Hands-on assistance with data analysis is not generally available without funding, although the staff can sometimes help with "small" data analysis projects . Fee-based collaborative consulting, including data analysis and written reports, can sometimes be obtained through our Center for Statistical Consulting.   Some larger projects can sometimes be addressed as independent study projects by select graduate students.  University researchers with a need for assistance with substantial data analysis are welcome to contact Paul Sampson (pds@stat.washington.edu) directly with details of their scientific problem.
