Welcome:
Francesca Bruno, from the University of Bologna is visiting to do
research with Peter Guttorp. She will be here until June 30, 2002.
Matthew Conroy, from the Department of Mathematics at the
University of Washington will be teaching Stat 394/395 this Winter 2002.
David Henderson, Acting Assistant Professor in Biostatistics for
Winter Quarter 2002. David has just graduated from Virginia Tech, and
will teach the Biostat/Stat 552 StatGen II classs, before taking up a
VIGRE positionat Iowa State in April. Although based primarily in
Biostat, David will also be a visiting researcher with the Statistical
Genetics group in Statistics.
Yulia Gel, She received her Ph.D. in Mathematics from
St. Petersburg State University. She is here as a PostDoc on Adrian
Raftery's MURI and will be visiting until September 15th, 2002 with
option to renew.

Congratulations:
Elizabeth Thompson was awarded the Weldon Memorial Prize. The
Weldon Memorial Prize is awarded by the University of Oxford since 1911
every 2-3 years for outstanding contributions to Biometric Science. The
prize is given without regard to nationality or membership of any
university. Joe Felsentein (UW Professor of Genetics and Adjunct
Professor of Statistics) won the prize last year.
Michael Na Li and Jianmin Liu are both very happy that their
baby, Bryan Tianxing Li was born on November 4th.
Andrew and Odette George are also very proud and happy parents of
Iona Caitlyn George (named after a Scottish island they both
loved). Iona was born on December 1st.
Haijun Li returned to the Department of Mathematics at Washington
State University.
Holiday:
The University of Washington will be closed on January 21, 2002 in
observance of Matin Luther King Jr. Day.
