Statistics in Aviation - Celebrating 100 Years of Flight

Fritz Scholz (Special Statistics Seminar)

University of Washington - Department of Statistics

This talk will start by pointing out the early importance of data in aviation with examples from the Wright Brothers and Lindbergh. After touching on aviation connections to some famous statisticians (Wald and von Mises), the role of the Boeing Scientific Research Laboratory (BSRL) and its connection to the University of Washington (Birnbaum, Klee, Pyke) is pointed out, with a brief mention of its successor, Boeing\'s Applied Statistics Group. This is followed by the statistical view of how safe is flying and a discussion of some examples from my experience as a statistician at Boeing.
