Some Ideas for Improving Cluster Analysis

Werner Stuetzle

University of Washington - Department of Statistics

The goal of cluster analysis is to discover the presence of distinct groups in data - contiguous, densely populated areas of feature space, separated by contiguous, relatively empty regions. I will review the most popular and widely available methods and argue that they leave room for improvement. In the second part of my talk I will sketch some ideas and discuss open problems.
