Information theory is a branch of signal processing used in the design of efficient and reliable communication systems. This theory encompasses powerful theorems to describe optimal coding of messages. Recently, Independent Component Analysis (ICA), a method derived from information-theoretical principles, has received attention in medical signal processing. The ICA algorithm has been successfully applied to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). An overview is given of the theory of ICA and several successful applications in functional MRI are presented.
