Inequality by Design: Cracking the Bell Curve Myth

Michael Hout

Seminar

University of California, Berkeley

The inequality of incomes and earnings in the United States has grown dramatically since 1974. Economists and sociologists have invoked changes in the characteristics of individuals, labor markets, and technological change as explanations for the trends in inequality. I review the strengths and weaknesses of these competing explanations and assess their plausibility.
