Statistical Genetics Certificate Application Process

1. Basic procedure:

1) Meet with the staff program coordinator (Mee Ling Hon, Statistics, mhon at stat.washington.edu) and or the faculty Program Director (Elizabeth Thompson, Statistics, eathomp at u.washington.edu)

2) Take any prerequisite courses recommended to you.

3) Complete a form.

4) If you are a graduate student in any UW program, have this form signed by your thesis advisor or the faculty Graduate Program Coordinator of your primary program and by the Statistical Genetics Certificate Program Director.

In more detail:

If you are a matriculated UW graduate student in good standing in your program, you will be accepted into the Certificate program provided you appear to have the necessary background knowledge to succeed. In some cases you may be required to take some background courses and/or it may be recommended that you take the initial course of the core StatGen STAT/BIOST 550, before finalizing your enrollment.

If you are a member of a UW graduate program it is important that your primary advisor/program is aware of your decision to enroll in the Statistical Genetics Certificate Program. Once accepted you will be asked to provide a form signed by the faculty Graduate Program Advisor of your primary program acknowledging that they are aware of (and hopefully approve of!) your enrollment in the Statistical Genetics Graduate Certificate Program.

Non-matriculated UW graduate students are also most welcome in theStatistical Genetics Certificate Program. In this case you may be required to provide references or previous education records in order that we can assess whether you appear to have the necessary background knowledge to succeed. In some cases you may be required to take some background courses and/or it may be recommended that you take the initial course of the core StatGen STAT/BIOST 550, before finalizing your enrollment.

Once accepted into the Certificate Program you will be assigned a Statistical Genetics advisor from among the Statistical Genetics faculty. This faculty advisor is specific to the Statistical Genetics Certificate Program, and is in addition to any advisor(s) you may have in connection with any other program.

If you are already in contact with any Statistical Genetics faculty member, and wish to have this person as your advisor, this will be so (subject to their agreement!).

Additional Information:

Additionally, the staff Advisor for the Certificate Program (currently Mee Ling Hon in Statistics) or the Program Director (currently, Elizabeth Thompson, Statistics) will be happy to advise you concerning Certificate curriculum or program matters.
