Welcome New Faculty: Alex Luedtke and Emilija Perković

The Department of Statistics is pleased to welcome Alex Luedtke and Emilija Perković as two new faculty members.

Alex Luedtke is an Assistant Professor in our department, with an affiliate appointment in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He received his Sc.B. in Applied Math from Brown University in 2012 and completed his Ph.D. in Biostatistics at University of California, Berkley in 2016, under the supervision of Mark van der Laan.

His research interests involve quantifying the uncertainty for population-level effects while making minimal assumptions for how the data were generated. He works with both clinical trial data and observational data — when working with observational data, he applies methods from causal inference to elicit assumptions under which a causal effect of an intervention can be estimated. He is also interested in using numerical methods to automated some of the analytic calculations that statisticians currently need to perform when developing new statistical procedures. In his applied work, he develops methods for studying the efficacy of HIV and dengue vaccine regimens. He is also serving as a lead statistician on the Imbokodo HIV vaccine efficacy trial.

During the summer, Alex traveled to France and Spain for vacation.

What he looks forward to doing in Seattle is collaborating with incredibly diverse statistical community.

Emilija Perković is an Acting Assistant Professor in our department. She completed her Ph.D. in Statistics at ETH Zürich in 2018  under the supervision of Marloes Maathuis. She received her B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Belgrade in 2012 and M.Sc. in Statistics from ETH Zürich 2014.

Her research interests are focused on causal inference from the perspective of graphical models. A large part of her Ph.D. thesis was on causal inference through covariate adjustment. She hopes to learn some new perspectives on causal inference while she is here.

During the summer, Emilija traveled to Spain and Italy for vacation. She also hiked around Switzerland when she was living there.

What she looks forward to doing in Seattle is exploring the city and surrounding national parks, trying new foods, and making new friends.

For leisure, she enjoys listening to podcasts and thinking about chocolate covered almonds or tea.
